Background of the Study
Mobile gaming is one of the products of advance technology and it has become a multibillion-dollar-a-year industry. Widespread ownership of cellphones ensures high market penetration for some proponents. In addition, the primary demographic for video games (youth and adults) are among those most likely to own a mobile phone.
The problem on our current generation is we are only focused on the technology itself and some of the Filipino youths of today have never possessed the intellectual pleasures of studying nor reading the historically significant biography of our National Heroes. For the young generation doing this fruitful activity is some sort of a compulsion rather than a productive urge of their freewill or volition to do so. Like of an instance, a Filipino student was required to write about the biographical summary of a certain national hero like “Jose Rizal” in order to pass a specific subject, without taking into consideration the beauty importance of the task that he or she was assigned to do. This is a truly bitter reality of how our modern world, now is.
The proponents will develop a 3D platformer android RPG whereas a single player follows a specific events in the lives of the heroes that he will meet during the game. The Philippine Heroes Android RPG could help individuals, specifically students who wants to learn and discover more about historical facts about our National Heroes not just by reading it but for experiencing it. This game will provide information about historical and cultural facts based on the characters that has been presented.
The proponents will use software packages such as Unreal Engine, for developing the game and MakeHuman and Blender for character design. Given the game’s virtual design, pleasant appearance is also its portable form you can play, enjoy, and learn anytime and anywhere. Noticeable to the public more significant to use.
Purpose and Description
The main purpose of this study is to promote and preserve cultural and historical facts of the Philippines using mobile game.
The game would have a 3D representation to provide a good gameplay and graphics that will stimulate the player’s imagination while playing and gaining knowledge at the same time. The gameplay will start after the user select an avatar that will represent as the main character. The story will depend on the user’s approach to different scenarios that are based from historical events of each presented hero.
Hence following the story, the proponents will use platformer as the game type that will allow the user control the avatar using a virtual joystick that is displayed on the screen which will control the movement of the character to jump between suspended platforms and avoid obstacles, and buttons which will allow the character to create variations of different skills to the opponents within each level. The proponents will also use AI or Artificial Intelligence in creating the opponents in the game. This game plays different types of scenarios, allowing end user to experience different things throughout the game. This serves as an effective informative learning environment for today’s generation. As a great Roman leader once said, “Experience is the Best Teacher.”
Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to design and develop a mobile game of Philippine heroes.
Specifically, the study aims to:
1. Design an informative learning environment through mobile gaming.
2. Design an offline android game that improves the learning outcomes of students in studying the Philippine Heroes through historical facts.
3. Develop a 3D mobile android game.
4. Develop a Role-Playing Game (RPG) with Artificial Intelligence as a component.
The proponents choose to develop a mobile game because it is portable, efficient to use and then integrated it into a learning environment so that learning would be easier, exciting and more fun.
Scope and Limitations
The study covers a 3D platformer android game that basically provides information about Philippine Heroes within the gameplay. In this study, the proponents will be discussing about the facts, importance and how it will help the users. The use of the game is much the basics, namely, to inform the users about historical facts, to improve decision making and character development, and to provide a more exciting learning and entertaining environment.
Information will include the historical facts mainly on the selected characters of the proponents’ choice. This covers the whole gameplay. Under the importance of Philippine Heroes Android RPG, it will be discussed that it is user-friendly, easy to manipulate and understood by the user. It is a single-player game putting the player against pre-programmed challenges or AI-controlled opponents. The user will not get a hard time figuring which is which or what is what, the interface is basic that everyone could understand even the person which is not familiarized with it. And lastly, how it will help the users.
Under this, the Philippine Heroes Android RPG will be a great
help for those who wants to learn about our historical and cultural facts and at the same time enjoys.
The study will not be available for multiplayers and online games. The game is only exclusive for android devices and not compatible with other mobile OS such as iOS, Nokia Symbian or Microsoft windows phone OS. As discussed earlier, the roles of the character will strictly follow their storylines. The character profiles, game maps, and contents are will strictly be based on the lives of the Filipino heroes and Filipino culture. The functions that are not included that is mentioned earlier is not necessary because the product’s function is focused on relaying data’s and information about Philippine heroes.
Definition of Terms
3D Representation. Three-dimensional model that displays a picture or item in a form that appears to be physically present with a designated structure. Essentially, it allows items that appeared flat to the human eye to be display in a form that allows various dimensions to be represented. And enables the exploration of virtual worlds with more realistic representation.
Android. Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google, based on a modified version of Linux kernel and other open source software and designed primarily for touch screen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence (AI) also machine intelligence (MI) is intelligence demonstrated by machine, in contrast to the natural intelligence (NI) displayed by humans and other animals. In computer science AI research is defined as the study of “intelligent agents”: any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. Colloquially, the term “artificial intelligence” is applied when a machine mimics “cognitive” functions that humans associate with other human minds, such as learning and problem solving.
Joystick. A joystick, also known as the control column, Joysticks are often used to control video games, and usually have one or more push-buttons whose state can also be read by the computer.
Mobile Game. Mobile Games are games designed for mobile devices, such as smartphones, feature phones, pocket PC’s, personal digital assistants (PDA), tablet PCs and portable media players. Mobile games range from basic (like Snake on older Nokia phones) to sophisticated 3D and Augmented Reality Games.
Mobile OS. Mobile operating system, also called a mobile OS, is an operating system that is specifically designed to run on mobile devices such as mobile phones, smartphones, PDAs, tablet computers and other handheld devices.
Multiplayer. A multiplayer is a video game in which more than one person can play in the same game environment at the same time.
Online Game. Online game is a video game that is either partially or primarily played through the internet or any other computer network available. The design of online games can range from simple text-based environments to the incorporation of complex graphics and virtual worlds.
Platformer. A platform game, or a platformer, is a video game genre and a subgenre of action game. In a platformer the player controls a character or avatar to jump between suspended platforms and avoid obstacles. Environments often feature uneven terrain requiring jumping and climbing in order to traverse them. Player often has some control over the height and distance jumps to avoid letting their character fall to their death or miss unnecessary jumps. The most common unifying element of games of this genre is the jump button, but now there are other alternatives like swiping a touchscreen.
Virtual. In computing, virtual is a digitally replicated version of something real. The replication, which is created with software, may not be an exact copy of the actual item, but it is similar enough in essence to be described as a digital rendition.
