The way in which people interact is made possible through consensus and is integral to society as both society and the individuals on a whole benefit. Consensus is developed through socialisation that is learnt in early childhood, where people learn norms, values and how to behave appropriately in society, this last throughout life. Consensus forms a fundamental part of Functionalism; a structural theory that aims to understand human behaviour based on how society operates collectively. Functionalism can also is a macro theory in that the various components of society allows for it to operate (Bown, Pountney, Maric and Meadows 2016)
